ACADEMIC DREAM ROOM :
The Academic Dream Room (ADR) for Tutoring and Enrichment is considered Bright Key® Highlands’ most vital program. Through a partnership with local business Personnel Resources, a classroom was furnished and equipped to be a space for tutoring and enrichment. The ADR serves as a place for learning enhancement, providing one-on-one tutoring and enrichment. Volunteers from the community visit once a week to provide one-on-one academic support to students’ individual needs in the tutoring program or to facilitate small group hands-on enrichment projects in the enrichment program.
The tutoring/enrichment takes place during school hours. Students are referred to the ADR by their teacher and principal as part of student academic success plans. From reading to science exploration, each child’s session is as unique as his/her needs. The ADR operates the entire school year. Approximately 100 students and 50 volunteers participate each year.
Community volunteers include employees from area businesses like MidSouth Bank, Americsource Bergen Corporation, Michelin and more. Other volunteers are members of Mt. Gilead Baptist Church, parents and grandparents of Highlands students and retired Dothan City Schools teachers. Volunteers completed a total of 421 hours on campus for the 2019 - 2020 school year (prior to Covid19 closing).
Do you enjoy children and have a little time each week to spare? We are always looking for more volunteers to give an hour each week to work with our students. To get involved, please fill out our volunteer form or contact Resource Coordinator, Jessica Steltenpohl.
Personnel Resources is the ADR partner for Highlands Elementary and has provided furnishings and decoration for the room. The ADR is a bright and fun environment that nurtures creativity and learning.
